Cate is going to pre-k next year and i have already noticed that kids are starting to attempt to tie their shoes, while i have always put Cate in those cute little sandals or flip flops…when did your kids start tieing their shoes and when were they able to sucessfully do it?
My oldest was able to do it when she was 5 years old, shortly before going to school we sat down every day for about 15-20 minutes and just worked on tying them with a shoe that was not put on her foot…she got it down pat in about 2 weeks.
When were your kids able to tie their shoes without your help?

One of my nieces successfully tied her shoes at 5 and the other was 6. It depends on the child. If they can learn faster or not.

My 5 y/o was learned to this year. It’s a bit of a useless skill for her at this point except for hiking shoes, LOL. Usually these days she just runs around barefoot, crocs if by the pool or lake, and thong sandals the rest of the time.

They usually start around 4, then successfully get it around 6-7

I was three, maybe four when my sister sat me down one evening and made me learn to tie my shoes before dinner, if I didn’t get it by then I wouldn’t be allowed to eat until I learned how. It worked in one evening. Good luck, why not try the straps on the shoes? that’s what my son wears and he’s going to be going to pre-K in the fall. its just easier to get them on for him.

My daughter learned when she was five. Literally, in like an hour. My son took longer, he has some motor skills issues, so he was about 6 1/2 before he really mastered the skill.
Don’t worry if your daughter can’t always tie them herself. That’s why there are adults in preschool. I wouldn’t be surprised if they spent time practicing tieing in class.
P.S. Don’t send her to school in flip flops. Most schools don’t allow it, and they can get injured on the playground in them. Make sure she has sneakers.
