No shoes in my house! I actually have the same mat as MJ
"Remove Thy Shoes". I have a baby that plays with toys in the floor and crawls around. We have hard wood floors and some carpet. I usually wear socks but my 6 yr. old and husband are usually bare foot. Because we don't wear shoes in the house, we can wear new white socks all around the house and they would still be snow white. Try that test in a home where people wear their shoes!
Note: We do not have shoes piled up at the door. We enter through the garage door and take them off in there before we ever come in.
References :
I don't let anyone wear shoes in my house. They track in fecal matter, sand (which will scratch my wood floors) water and other stuff I prefer not to have in my house. I even have a sign outside that says "Please Romove Thy Shoes". I allow socks or bare feet for guests and they respect that. My shoe rack is right next to the door with a chair for convenience.
References :
Kids are not allowed to wear shoes in my house. In fact no one is allowed to wear shoes in my house. There is a pile of shoes at the door that is a clear indication that no shoes are allowed. When my kids have friends over most will take their shoes off with my kids. A few have come over and my daughter will tell them "you have to take your shoes off in my house it is my moms rule." As far as regular guests my friends and repeat visitors know about the rule so they kick their shoes off without any disscussion. For first time visitors many will see the pile or my new sign and take their shoes off. Only a few people have I actually had to say "could you just take off your shoes we do the no shoes in the house thing around here." When people take off their shoes they either walk around in socks or barefeet. My kids and I usually wear socks around the house. Whenever I go to someone elses house the first thing I do is take off my shoes. If they say anything I just tell them that it is the rule in my house. That way if they come to visit they will remember my rule.

Hope this helps
References :
OK this is my own personal observation on this. For some reason this is something that I have thought about a LOT.

Really poor people and upper class people wear shoes in the house. I am talking trashy people and then people who make $150 plus.

Most of the people I know are middle class people and we work hard for what we have. Everyone takes their shoes off when they come to the door. I don't have to ask. If a kid comes in and doesn't take them off, I ask.

A family friend was house sitting for a doctor and she took her shoes off at the door and he was insulted. He said in a very condescending tone "IF you are going to take your shoes off in the house, PLEASE wear house slippers" She was soo embarrassed. She thought she was being polite.

I have white carpet!
References :
I've heard that it is better to wear shoes than walk around bare foot, because the oils on our feet wear the carpet down a lot more than dirt...and dirt is a lot easier to clean.
References :
If I were to have anyone come into a household with a concern about wearing shoes, then I would provide them with "keepable" slides or collapsible shoes. This goes for children as well. Personally, I wipe my shoes off before I enter someone's home. Out of pure respect. I don't ever go anywhere with sloppy mud or debris from the street hanging onto my clothing. Ditto for obscene gestures and language, which is just totally out of place. Remember this, What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? - Romans 8:31. The Lord daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah. Psalm 68:19. Peace and Love.
References :
Kids in general should NOT WEAR SHOES AT ALL. They are bad for the proper formation of their feet.
