How to properly lace up athletic shoes?

Is there a certain way to lace up a athletic shoe or is it just preference? Should the laces come up from under the grommet or over and down through the grommet? Does anyone find that if they lace their shoes up in a different way that they experience foot pain?

Up from under seems to be the standard. BUT, it all depends on how your shoe fits your foot. Start with a good shoe that fits your foot. Then you can fine tune it by lacing appropriately. Runner’s World has a few short videos demonstrating different lacing techniques depending upon your specific issue. I don’t get foot pain and I lace my shoes a little differently. I lace my shoes from the top down to the bottom of the shoe. So instead of tying the laces at the top of the shoe I tie them by my toes. It works for my running shoes, but I don’t know about other athletic shoes.
